Yomiuri Giants by 2There's nothing like the scent of baseball drama in the air, especially when the Hiroshima Carp and the Yomiuri Giants go head to head on the diamond. It's like a slightly watered down vintage wine, however, as the Carps lumber in with a 36-34 record, whereas our Giants graciously gift their opponents with a 37-38 season score. So, we're essentially looking at a grudge match between two teams doing their best interpretations of mediocre dance routines.
Now, if we swivel our gaze towards the Carp, despite recent lethargic performance against Tokyo Yakult Swallows, they've been managing to push their weight around against the Giants in the past; they've hugged victory enough times to not make their past performances look like staged wrestling match.
But then there are Giants - think of the most favored child in a family who somehow keeps tripping over their own feet. Yes, they’ve been coming in second in recent match-ups against the Hiroshima Carp, yet they've kept themselves neck-deep in talent to stay afloat.
If we whip out the recent match reports, like a magician drawing out endless handkerchiefs from his sleeve, the Yomiuri Giants might have had a bumpy ride with Hanshin Tigers and Yokohama DeNA BayStars, but their rallying against those tough matchups only embellished their reputation as serious contenders.
Drawing a straight line through all these stats and data points like a slightly deranged cartographer, I'd put my money on the Giants for the win. The Carp might have had their golden moments, but it's the Giants’ recent efforts against tough opposition that gives them an edge.
