The Chicago White Sox brought the heat to Houston once before this season, taking the Astros down 7-3, but let's not start engraving their names on the trophy just yet. The Astros are still holding on to the better season record at 36-29 compared to White Sox's weaker 22-44. For the Sox, starting pitcher Shane Smith has put up a decent fight on the mound this season, clinging on to an ERA of 2.43 and a WHIP of 1.17. It's fair to say Lance McCullers Jr. of the Astros hasn't exactly been a human highlight reel this season, with a higher ERA of 4.62 and a 1.45 WHIP but keep in mind, his 12.7 K/9 is not to be taken lightly.
Looking at the line-up, the White Sox are coming into the matchup with some notable talent. The standout this season: Chase Meidroth who has held up a 0.327 batting average. His fellow teammates Austin Slater, Miguel Vargas, Mike Tauchman, and Andrew Benintendi also seem to be shaking things up, but they will have to score runs against a strong Astros team. Notably Jeremy Pena is flashing an impressive 0.360 batting average, reminding the White Sox not to get too comfortable. Jake Meyers, Isaac Paredes, Jose Altuve, and Christian Walker are also making a significant contribution to the Astros’ lineup.
Considering the Astros' recent track record, the Minute Maid Park, and some impressive talent in the batter's box, things are looking brighter for Houston. I'd say they have the edge, but it's not going to be a cakewalk. The White Sox won't be coming to play pattycake.
