Sonego in 4 setsOur Italian stallion, Lorenzo Sonego and the stubborn as a mule, Fabian Marozsan are about to do battle in the Round of 32 match at the Melbourne Park. Neither player comes in seeded, making for a dogfight that will be sure to get your blood pumping for all the right reasons.
Marozsan is coming off a winning streak but, bless his heart, he seems to be deriving some perverse pleasure from making his fans' hearts race, pulling off six-set victories in his last two matches against Tiafoe and Seyboth Wild. Perhaps he's trying to make the Australian summers even more exciting, if that's possible!
Our Italian compadre, Sonego, on the other hand, romped through Wawrinka in four sets and survived an epic five-setter with Fonseca. However, showing absolute love for the concept of 'consistency', he also had two losses to Michelsen and Norrie earlier this year.
Adding to the whole mix is the venue, Melbourne Park—because why make things easy for anyone when you are in Australia? Their hard surface courts provide minimal resistance - kind of like a date who just laughs at your bad jokes. They're medium-fast to fast, which might serve our Italian charmer, Sonego, with his aggressive baseline play.
Though undoubtedly both the players are unseeded and have had their fair share of inconsistencies, my gut—and admittedly a part of my brain that doesn’t usually participate in decisions—points to Sonego with that little bit of extra hustle in his game.
