Fils in straight setsWhile Arthur Fils might be strutting around as the top seed in the tournament, let's remember Learner Tien isn't exactly a newcomer to the sport. Yes, the past performance radar blips pretty largely in favor of Fils, and Tien's recent dalliances have been more turbulent than a 3 AM nachos run.
Remember back in late summer when Fils had the audacity to snatch the victory from Tien in a 3 to 1 sets showdown? Consider that payback trigger in Tien's mind, which has been surprisingly tough to set off. Well, let's hope Tien pulls that trigger in the Next Gen Finals because pizzas aren't the only things that need to be delivered hot.
Now, would you back a horse that's been beaten by the same jockey twice? I don't think so. Tien needs to put some fire in his belly, especially when looking at his recent losses. It's like a seesaw having a bad day, one high and then a couple of lows. The man needs stability, like a cat needs whiskers.
Fils, on the other hand, has been swinging his racket like a magical wand. Sure, he has had his share of upsets, but largely seems to stay afloat. And the man seems to have a calendar that only has room for the letter 'W'. It's like he bought his success at a Sears closeout sale.
So, here's my two cents for what it's worth - you'd be a fool not to bet on the guy the bookies are favouring. Given their recent track records and the past duel, I would be more surprised if Fils didn't come out on top.
