Fernandez in 3 setsNow if I understand my statistics and may in fact know how to add and subtract, which I must say is crucial in a tennis match, Leylah Fernandez, our 27th seed, seems to come across as the darling of the hour. Sure, she may have hit a few potholes on her journey here with the back-to-back defeats against Mertens and Anisimova, but she showed her knack for bouncing back, just like me after my fifth cup of coffee.
Then, you have the dark horse, Jaqueline Cristian, unseeded and unpredictable. She's had her share of wins, let's not forget that. But, heroine of an underdog story or not, tennis isn't exactly a fairytale sport.
By the way, isn't it amusing that in tennis, the term “love” isn't as affectionate as it sounds. Means a big goose egg in scoring terms and let's hope neither of these talented ladies get too accustomed to that term in this match. But, if you want my professional, slightly cynical opinion? I'd wager that Fernandez can pull out the win against Cristian.
