Birrell in 3 setsAh, the delightful match of Elise Mertens and Kimberly Birrell, taking center stage once again. Attendees of that particular Thursday in October 2024 will remember how Birrell triumphed with 1 set all. It was quite euphoric, quite climactic - much like my Uncle Harold's tenth wedding. Far too exciting for its own good.
But polls, numbers, and casinos don't live in the past. They've placed their chips on Mertens. Quite noteworthy, given that the bookies don't typically get generous with the pennies. Yet recent scores echo a faint, almost remorseful tune for Mertens, losing two out of her previous five matches, including the most recent one. Perhaps they've been dazzled by Mertens' sparkling 28 tournament seed, like a moth to a chandelier.
Meanwhile, Miss Birrell, dear Kimberly, has been raining down a dearth of love on her opponents, claiming the victory for all but one of her previous matches. Yet, she remains unseeded, a wildflower in the sterile, organized world of tournament seeds. Just like my sister at the family reunions, uninvited but undeniably present.
Look folks, this match isn't a Sunday afternoon walk in the park, and it's certainly not a charity bake-off. It's going to be a sweaty, grueling back-and-forth with a fair share of groaning. It's not apparent if Mertens can recover her step and pace, especially against Birrell's current form.
