Here we go again, it's the Houston Astros squaring off against the St. Louis Cardinals down at Busch Stadium. Should be a real treat, especially if you're a fan of pitching. Busch Stadium isn't exactly what I'd call a hitter's paradise.
On the rubber, we've got Ronel Blanco reprising his role as "Every Batter's Dream" for the Astros. He’s boasting a 7.23 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, with an impressive 12.9 K/9 over 3 games. Sounds wonderful if you're wearing the other team's jersey.
Now, lacing them up tight for the Cardinals, we've got Steven Matz, holding a far more respectable 2.41 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 4.8 K/9. Already looking like a real David and Goliath thing, don't you think?
For the Astros, we're looking at Jake Meyers, Jose Altuve, and Yordan Alvarez. Meyers is showing some promise with Altuve tagging along in tow. Alvarez though, sitting a bit low on the average but keeping up with the RBIs.
Don't pull out that betting slip just yet, though. How about the Cardinals? Brendan Donovan is killing it. Nolan Gorman and Nolan Arenado seem to be doing a fair bit of their own damage too.
Now, about this recent history thing. They've been going tip for tat in the last 5 games, but the Cardinals did walk away 4-2 in their own yard last June.
In terms of seasonal form, well, guess what - it’s pretty much a toss-up. Houston trails behind with 7 wins and 9 losses and the Cardinals are evenly split at 8-8. Recent matches? Nothing remarkable on either side.
So, given Blanco's love for giving away runs, Matz outshining him on the mound, and the Cardinal batters showing a bit more than the Astros, I'm calling this one for the home side.
