Arizona Diamondbacks by 2
Oh, boy! A day game at Chase Field, the perfect time to get a tan and watch the San Diego Padres take on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The man on the mound for the Padres is Stephen Kolek. A decent enough pitcher, peppered with a tolerable 3.10 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, but he only strikes out around 6.4 batters per nine innings. Compare that to Ryne Nelson, the Diamondbacks' starter, who's got a slightly high 4.83 ERA, a pretty decent 1.17 WHIP, and strikes out a whopping 8 batters per nine innings. Not sure if Kolek's math skills are that great, but 8 is definitely more than 6.4.
Let's take a look at the roster here for a sec. The Padres have given us Manny Machado who's hitting .305 with 19 RBIs and 7 home runs. Not too shabby, huh? And then there's Jose Iglesias, who, well, can't say he's been lighting the fire, but .300 isn't terrible, right? Then there's Gavin Sheets. 18 RBIs, 6 home runs and... Uh-oh, a .189 average? Sheets, buddy, you might want to work on that one!
Moving on to the Diamondbacks, they've got Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with a .323 batting average and a respectable number of RBIs, but only 3 home runs. Hmm, seems he needs to eat more Wheaties to pump up those homers. Gabriel Moreno's on deck, sporting the same average as Lourdes but just a smidge less RBIs. Lastly, there's Ketel Marte, at .322 average, 17 RBIs, and 9 home runs.
So, let's review: the Diamondbacks have a higher scoring history at their home field, some really solid players on deck, and a starting pitcher who could probably throw a baseball through a brick wall if he tried. On the other hand, the Padres haven't been performing as brilliantly, especially with that dodgy performance by Sheets I mentioned earlier.
Who knows, maybe the weather might favor the Padres, but based on park factors, recent results, and basically everything else, I'm placing my chips on the Diamondbacks.
