What an amusing pair-up we have tonight folks - the Cincinnati Reds at Detroit Tigers, squaring off in the good ol' Comerica Park, and no need to be mystified by a mystery number by the way, the Park definitely does its bit to support our pitchers. And let’s leave it at that.
Our featured Reds pitcher, Nick Martinez, is squeezing out a decent 3.82 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP, that's regular season folks, nothing to get overly excited about. On the opposite mound for the Tigers, Keider Montero is having a season as splendid as a cloud-covered sky. With a 4.51 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Oh, the joy of those numbers.
The Reds have got some hitters who might complicate matters though. TJ Friedl is smoking hot, batting 0.330. Not to discount Elly De La Cruz either. Who cares if he only bats a 0.289 when he's delivering 15 RBIs and 7 long balls, all while swiping 6 bases? Will Benson’s also doing his bit, with 15 RBIs and 6 homers. Not that we care.
Let’s not leave out the Tigers now, as we have Wenceel Perez batting a comfortable 0.317, and Riley Greene pretty close behind at 0.306, supporting those 22 RBIs and 4 homers. Spencer Torkelson is loitering around batting 0.215, if anyone cared to know.
Looking at past matchups, it appears to be a bit of seesaw between the teams. If I had to say, it seems that Detroit’s taken a bite out of this apple more often than Cincinnati, but hey, who's really counting anyway, right?
For those keeping track, the regular season record shows the Reds are doing an admirable impression of a teeter-totter at 35-34, while the Tigers are strutting around, sitting pretty at 44-25.
And you may have heard some mumblings about recent performance. The Reds came up big over Arizona, but had a hiccup against Cleveland. The Tigers dominated Chicago and held their own against Baltimore, except for that one OUCH of a loss.
All this being said, and in the best performance of "I pulled numbers out of thin air", here's my prediction.
