Ah, the scent of hot dogs and crying Mets fans. Let's plunge right into this sheer majesty of a baseball stoush, between the Chicago Cubs, gracing us all the way from their windy city and our own New York Mets.
A little birdie told me some folks favor the Mets in this. Something about the whole "New York never sleeps" thing potentially translating into more bat swings.
Our gladiators on the pitching mound today are the Cubs' Jameson Taillon and the Mets' Clay Holmes. Taillon has been holding his own with a well-kept ERA of 3.90 and a 1.02 WHIP this season. On the flip side, Holmes for the Mets is boasting a 3.04 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP, not too shabby at all, folks.
The Cubs are certainly not lacking in their batting lineup, standout guys being Carson Kelly and Peter Crow-Armstrong. These two guys have been cracking out some impressive hits along with the addition of Seiya Suzuki. On the home team's side, Pete Alonso's got a swell batting average of 0.340 with Luisangel Acuna and Francisco Lindor in the mix.
Historically, these two have been giving each other a run for their money. Last five meetups swung like a pendulum, but the cubs managed to grab two wins. The fact that I’m mentioning this almost makes it sound important. Doubt it.
Now, let's not bat around any further. The Cubs come in with a 22-16 record while the Mets bask in a superior 24-14. based on recent games, the Cubs have been a bit of a mixed bag lately, with some wins and losses here and there. However, the Mets are shaking off a bit of a losing streak. All while fighting the urge of their fan-base to angrily throw Nathan's Famous hot dogs unto the pitch.
Given these factors, all under the fine mist of stale beer in Queens' Citi Field, slightly less friendly to batters than the norm, we might be thrown a curveball this game.
So, without further ado:
