Here we are folks, a match made in baseball heaven. We're looking at a classic rivalry, with the Toronto Blue Jays flying into Boston to go claw-to-claw with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. And let me tell you, this ain't no field trip for Toronto. Fenway's been known to be quite friendly to batters and tourists alike - plenty of memories for both.
Taking the mound for the Blue Jays, we've got old reliable, Kevin Gausman. Sporting a respectable seasonal line so far at a 4.05 ERA, he's got that icy 0.72 WHIP but seems a little lean in the strikeouts. What a fun contrast to Boston's frustrated flamethrower Tanner Houck. Remember those innocent days when he had a 3.233 ERA last season? He’s currently sitting at a less-than-impressive 6.85 ERA this season in just two appearances.
Speaking of players in a bit of a slump, let's have a look at the Blue Jays' diamond brigade. George Springer, Tyler Heineman, and Andres Gimenez made the trip. Springer, even on an infernal streak with a batting average of .459, can't carry the team on his own. Heineman and Gimenez need to pick up the pace a bit, posting .429 and .220 respectfully.
Turning our gaze to the home team. On the Red Sox, Bregman's not exactly hitting 'em out of the park with a .308 average, but seems to have driven in a decent pack of runs at 10 RBIs. Romy Gonzalez, Wilyer Abreu, and Kristian Campbell are also doing some heavy lifting at the plate.
Now, historians among us might be aware of the past struggles between these two teams. Blue Jays seem to have had their way with the Red Sox in their last few meetings, but is it the start of a trend or a statistical fluke? Who knows?
Season records are a pick six with the Jays at a neat 7-5, while the Sox are breaking even at 6-6. And while the Blue Jays had a rough time with their recent outing to New York, they seem to have bounced back nicely against our dear Red Sox. Likewise, the Sox had a high scoring series against St. Louis and may have been left gassed for the Blue Jays.
There are always a million factors at play, but one can’t help but think the Jays might repeat history given their recent dominance over the Sox. So, I’m calling it as it is:
