Well, as I see dolls and action figures at Wimbledon, it seems we have the thrill of witnessing Roberto Carballes Baena and James Duckworth battle it out on the Melbourne stage in the land of the kangaroos. Here's the doozy though, neither of them are seeded! Sets a nice ambiance, doesn't it? Glaring underdogs knocking fists, or shall I say rackets in the Australian Open.
Scrutinizing their recent matches, Duckworth hasn't been faring all too well, having been bagged and tagged in two out of his last five endeavors. That puts him in a bit of a pickle, but then again, Carballes Baena hasn't been consistently ruling love all himself, struggling in a match or two along the way.
The tennis spectacle will unfold on none other than Melbourne Park's hard surface. How will this factor into the match? Normally, playing on these fast courts can take the breath out of a beaver (not that I suspect any beavers are keen on tennis). The high bounce on this court could give our spin doctors a bit of an edge, but I reckon we're going to see a bit more fast-paced straight shooting than a pirouetting ball.
Despite the slight inconsistencies shown by both players recently, Carballes Baena's calamitous play may put him on a fast train to love town if he can't keep up with the hard court's pace. Assuming Duckworth doesn't choke on his morning Vegemite, and with a slight wagering edge peeking from under the kangaroo's tail, he might just have a shot at putting Baena in his rear-view mirror.
Albert’s Prediction: Duckworth in 3 sets.
