Alexandrova in 3 setsAlright, tennis aficionados! We've got a headliner coming up in the Mutua Madrid Open, Ekaterina Alexandrova squaring off against Olga Danilovic. My, oh, my, don't we have a clash here?
Let's pull back the curtain on these ladies. Alexandrova, sitting pretty at seed 21, hasn't exactly been running the table recently. Ostapenko recently served her two straight courses of humble pie with a side of racquet. However, she bounced back with shutouts against Pegula, Andreeva, and Samsonova showing she can definitely play with the big girls.
On the other side of the net, Danilovic has certainly flirted with disaster lately. Losing a set against Uchijima and Fruhvirtová? That's edging the line of acceptable. Although, knocking Azarenka off her perch with 2 sets to love? Now that's a headline.
Here's the rub, Alexandrova is seeded for a reason. She's as consistent as a Swiss watch when it comes to her game and that level of dependability can be worth its weight in gold or in this case, tennis balls. No offence to Danilovic, but going note for note against an experienced player like Alexandrova could quickly spell doom.
So as much as I enjoy a thrilling underdog story, this match seems more like a bedtime story.
