Here we go, baseball nuts. We've got the Seattle Mariners strolling into the Oakland Coliseum to take on the Athletics. Now, the Coliseum isn’t exactly every batter’s dream with its lower Park Factor favoring those on the mound, so we can expect a little less fireworks from both line-ups, especially Mariners.
However, on the subject of hurlers, the Mariners' Emerson Hancock has a less than stellar record this season, boasting a generous 6.80 ERA over 4 appearances, while Jeffrey Springs from the A's isn't fairing much better at 5.01 over 7 outings. Less than impressive, gentlemen. When you are in a Majors pitcher's uniform, you are expected to perform, not throw a cocktail party for home run hitters.
Now let's talk personnel, and who can overlook Leonardo Rivas from the Mariners, batting at an admirable .341 or their upcoming star J.P. Crawford with a .333 average, proving not all power comes from your biceps. On the other side, the A's Jacob Wilson, with a .330 average, is a definite tough out and don't forget about the kid, Tyler Soderstrom, the future of the club who's holding his own. Stats are charming, but will they win you games? Ask the Orioles.
The two teams are not exactly strangers, they have met several times recently with mostly nail-biting finishes. The tales of their victories and losses are as diverse as the food served at a ballpark. You'll need a scorecard to keep track. Recently though, the Athletics seem to be on an upswing, winning a few of those battles and staying hot.
Coming to the season records, the Mariners, with a score of 20-13, are looking slightly more formidable than Athletics who hold a record of 19-16. In their recent games though, A's seem a tad hotter than the Mariners. Many of us can remember the time when a hot winning streak was more important than the Mayor's birth certificate.
So pull out your lucky socks, the game of inches is afoot. The Mariners seem to have a slight edge here. But remember, I'm no psychic, and predicting baseball is about as easy as catching a greased piglet. Trust me, I've tried. Both.
