Looking at this splendidly peculiar matchup of the underdogs, we find ourselves in Oriole Park at Camden Yards – a spot that caters quite nicely to the batter’s box. Pity our pitchers though, especially Chicago White Sox's Davis Martin with a 3.51 ERA and Baltimore Orioles' Dean Kremer dragging along with a 5.26 ERA. With this park's love for batters, they're going to have their work cut out.
Speaking of batters, Lenyn Sosa from the White Sox, with his .315 batting average, 10 RBIs, and 2 home runs, is eager to have a field day. Not to forget, Miguel Vargas and Andrew Benintendi providing strong support, even though Benintendi could do better than a .263 batting average.
Over on the Orioles side, they seem to have found a gem in Ryan O'Hearn with a .362 average and 4 homers. Ryan Mountcastle, Jackson Holliday, and Cedric Mullins, albeit struggling with a .180 batting average, are certainly no dead weights either.
Now for some nostalgia, our history book shows the Orioles have a habit of winning when up against the White Sox, including a recent snap victory. Noticeably though, both the White Sox and Orioles have not exactly had a season to boast about with a 18-39 and 20-36 win-loss record respectively.
But that is where the fun is, isn't it? Betting against the odds. Baltimore might be seated on the favored side, but Chicago has shown flashes of brilliance like that 9-4 win over the Yankees. They've been flirting with victory only to let it slip away like that close encounter, 1-2 against Baltimore.
Now, if I were a betting man, and I sure as hell am, I'd put my money on the resilience of the underdogs. Betting is, after all, the only socially acceptable form of hopeful madness. And sometimes, my friends, the underdogs do bite.
