On paper, the Toronto Blue Jays edge past the Boston Red Sox, with a slightly better regular season record of 44-38 versus the Bostonites' 41-43. But let's not forget we're at Fenway Park tonight, which tends to add an extra spring in the step of those swinging bats, if you get what I mean.
Now, let's talk hurlers. Eric Lauer of the Blue Jays boasts an impressive 2.32 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP this season. Now, that's a man who doesn't let people on base easily folks! Plus, he's striking out almost a batter an inning. On the other side of the diamond, we have Walker Buehler of the Red Sox. Despite his commendable 8.2 K/9, he's wrestling with a rather inflated 6.43 ERA and higher-than-average WHIP this season.
Next up, we have Ernie 'Clutch' Clement, Alejandro 'The Cannon' Kirk, and George 'The Springer' Springer of the Blue Jays. Their bats have been on fire over the past month, Clement leading the charge with a 0.390 batting average. The Red Sox are not too shabby either with Romy ‘Rocket’ Gonzalez, Abraham 'Bullseye' Toro, and Ceddanne 'Fence Crasher' Rafaela. Toro and Rafaela both need to up their game though, batting just above .300.
Digging into the past encounters, well, it's a mixed bag of Red Sox and Blue Jays victories. Most notably, Boston trounced Toronto 15-1 on June 28, but Toronto bounced back for a shutout the very next day. Quite the seesaw fight, I must say!
What have the recent results shown us? Both teams have had their ups and downs. Don't ignore the Blue Jays shutting out the Sox in a recent face-off, though. That's got to sting, no matter how rosy you paint it.
Based on this, I think we're in for a close tussle, but the numbers are telling me the Jays have the edge.
