Now here's a game that's going to be about as exciting as watching paint dry. The New York Mets versus the Pittsburgh Pirates, a true heavy-bag versus a balsa-wood contender. I hope you've got your rain checks ready.
Both teams roll out their starting pitchers, with the Mets sending out Paul Blackburn and his massive 7.09 ERA. That's not a winning stat unless you're contending for lousiest pitcher. On the flip side, the Pirates serve up Bailey Falter, with a decent if not spectacular 3.69 ERA. For those of you not in the know, that means he's somewhat effective at stopping the other team from scoring... most of the time.
Your standout players from the Mets are the dynamic trio of Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo, and Pete Alonso. Now, these guys are hitters. The type you'd want backing you up in a bar fight. One hits hard, one hits tons and the third...well he also hits. The Pirates though... bless their hearts, they trod out Nick Gonzales, Spencer Horwitz, Andrew McCutchen and Bryan Reynolds. Nice guys, but I wouldn’t bring them along to a Scrabble challenge, let alone a kitchen-sink baseball game.
In the hodgepodge of past matches, it’s a toss-up. A couple of wins each. But let's not forget current form. The Mets have more wins under their belt this season and while the Pirates’ recent win might give them a slight moral high ground, they're still sitting on a mountain of losses.
The game is at good ol' PNC Park in iconic Pittsburgh, USA. A place that likes to tilt things in favor of those guys swinging the sticks. But let's face it, could they have chosen a worse place for this Phaser Fizzle?
So, while your cash is your own, I can't in good conscience back anything other than the Mets on this one. For all Blackburn’s failings, I'm not convinced the Pirates have got enough bat power. Meanwhile, the Mets, they've got the cannons in Soto, Nimmo, and and Alonso to launch the ball out of PNC park.
All this culminates in our prediction:
