With a pitchers' park like Petco Park, you'd hope your guy on the mound has better stats than a 5.60 ERA. I'm talking to you, Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks. San Diego's Nick Pivetta, on the other hand, seems well insulated against the bats of Arizona with his 3.27 ERA and facts like these can be life savers or dream killers depending on which side of the betting desk you're sitting on.
The D-backs' batting lineup does provide a little thorn in the Padres' side. A notable guy, Josh Naylor, has been making his presence known with a .316 average and 19 runs batted in. You pair that with Eugenio Suarez and his whopping 0.310 average along with 29 RBIs and things seem like they just might get interesting.
But let's not forget San Diego's boys. Luis Arraez is producing at a noteworthy .311 clip and helping the run production along with 13 RBIs of his own.
Oh, and just a throwback to when these two clashed against each other - veterans in the crowd might remember the Padres' drubbing of the Diamondbacks at their own home 8-2 back in June.
Regular season record-wise, the Padres are the better ballet dancers, with a 47-41 record compared to the Diamondbacks' 44-46, so they're likely to be doing most of the twirling in today's matchup.
Crunching all this mess of numbers, eating up player forms, past face-offs, even considering the effect of the moon phase on the biorhythms of the third baseman or some other nonsensical variable, here's my prediction:
