Arizona Diamondbacks by 2As we look forward to another exciting showdown in Phoenix, Arizona between the Kansas City Royals and the Arizona Diamondbacks, the stats speak quite the story. Starting with the pitchers, Kansas City's Michael Lorenzen will be on the mound, coming from a season with a 5.17 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Facing him, the Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani's numbers are a bit more promising, admittedly still not pristine, with his 4.95 ERA and 1.21 WHIP this season.
Fancy a bit of batting prowess? Kansas City's got quite a few names to throw in the ring starting with Freddy Fermin which his .340 batting average. Young gun Bobby Witt Jr. has also proven himself to be quite a challenge with 13 RBIs and 4 home runs. And then there's Vinnie Pasquantino, showing off with his .291 batting average and 22 RBIs. But we can't forget old reliable, Salvador Perez, the veteran with 22 RBIs and 5 home runs, although a slightly lower batting average.
But don't underestimate the force of Arizona's Josh Naylor, a serious contender with 19 RBIs and a keen .316 batting average. Eugenio Suarez boasts a .310 batting average and 12 home runs, while Ketel Marte sits on a .306 batting average and 9 home runs. Impressive lot indeed.
Past matchups have seen a mixed bag, with both teams swapping victories and defeats like cards on a poker table. With the most recent encounter falling in favor of Arizona, could the odds be in their favor?
Though their season records hover shakily around the .500 mark with Kansas City showing an uninspired 42-48 and Arizona a nearly balanced 44-45, recent results paint a different picture. The Royals have shown some grit, scoring victories over the Mariners, while the Diamondbacks have had a series of highs and lows, most recent being a community fall to the Giants.
Given their performance in their own backyard, aka Chase Field which oh-so coincidentally favors batters, and the starting pitchers set to make their mark, the Diamondbacks seem to show a bit of an edge.
