Nakashima in straight setsDespite the clay between their sneakers, this isn't a sandbox; it's the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. It's Nakashima and McDonald firing volleys as if the score was settled around a juicy quarter-pounder. Now, if history had anything to say about it, I would have packed my bags for McDonald by now. After all, he's managed to chow down on Nakashima in all their previous encounters. But remember, ol' Mackenzie here isn't the seeded player; Nakashima is.
Looking at recent matches, it's clear Nakashima didn't exactly come tumbling off the mountains, although there were some bumps. McDonald didn't cook up a constant winning streak either. But here's the thing about tennis – it's as much about mentality as it is about talent. And stepping onto the court knowing you've never won against your opponent? That can really unscrew your cap, if you know what I mean.
So, as delightful as it's been to stroll down Memory Lane, the present day shows us a basketball match. Two players, one ball, and a fair chance of anybody's game. Well, perhaps not so fair considering that Nakashima has the better payout. The odds are in his favor, but odds and winnings are as different as eggs and eggplants in this game.
