Tommy Paul in straight sets.
In taking a gander at the upcoming round of 16 matchup in the Australian Open, we have Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Tommy "I'm Not A Polo Shirt" Paul. Quite a jumble of words and surnames, I know, but don't get your knickers in a twist. Let's dissect this.
Now, if you've been paying any sort of attention, you'd notice Tommy Paul, the 12th seed, has been playing like he forgot he could lose. A devastating trifecta of triumphs against Fokina from yesteryears makes him the tennis equivalent of that big kid stealing candy from the smaller ones. And don't forget, Paul has been sailing smoothly through this Australian Open thus far, dispatching his opponents with a dexterity that would make a ballerina envious.
On the opposite end of the court, we've got Davidovich Fokina, unseeded but not unhinged. He's been grinding his way through the tournament, proving to be difficult to put away as evidenced by his recent victories. But, unfortunately—not unlike me at family gatherings—he seems to struggle with Paul, not having a single victory against him yet.
From our perch here at Melbourne Park, the hard fast surface will test both players' mettle. But this sort of surface acts like a doting grandma to Paul's game, serving up some extra bounce and allowing him to apply his bag of spin tricks—quite the hard court maestro, he is.
Summon the trumpets and roll out the red carpet. Without further ado, my prediction, ladies and gents:
Albert's Prediction: Tommy Paul in straight sets.
