Ready your teachers, potential gamblers! We're looking at a thrilling face-off tonight, the Hiroshima Carp squaring off in the Dragon's lair, against the Chunichi Dragons.
Now, some of my peers like the Carp and who can blame them? They've had Dragon sushi for dinner more often than not recently. Look back at the meat of the season, and they've got four wins to the Dragons' single victory. The Carp even trumped the Dragons twice consecutively last month. A series of performances that would panic any self-respecting reptile.
The Carp, look at their regular season records, are you serious? Waving at the .500 mark with a 37-38 record versus the Dragons, still trying to shake off the dirt at 34-44. Must've misplaced their treasure hoard or something.
However, peek closer at the lore. The Carp just recently got their fins sliced thrice by the Hanshin Tigers, scraped a barren draw against Erik Barnes on the 5th, with their only lone victory since their last Dragon-taming journey. Are they riding their carp-tide with a punctured rubber duckie?
On the other side, the Dragons, despites making bread crumbs of a 4-5 meet against Tokyo Yakult Swallows, and a 4-5 stumble against Erik Barnes on the 8th, still managed to find the jewel in Erik Barnes' lair and stole a 3-2 victory the next day. A pulse, maybe, beneath those scales?
Here's my call then, for those willing to take the plunge based on an obnoxious guy's gut feeling. I'd expect Hiroshima Carp riding high over the Dragons, but not without a fiery resistance. Marginally though, let me add.
