Starting with the pitchers, we've got Joey Cantillo on the mound for the Cleveland Guardians, clocking in this season with a 4.17 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and a rather impressive 13.3 K/9 rate over 23 outings. In the opposing corner, we find Aaron Civale of the White Sox, with a 5.25 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and a less than thrilling 6.4 K/9 rate over his 10 appearances. Ah, the sweet music of baseball, where numbers two decimal places deep can either comfort or curse you.
Looking at the batting box, notable big guns for the Guardians are young stars Nolan Jones and Steven Kwan. Meanwhile, the White Sox counter with Edgar Quero and Lenyn Sosa trying to find their groove. I’d watch out for Jose Ramirez though. And I don't just mean his lurking .214 average or his impressive six dingers and 15 RBIs in the regular season.
Turning the pages of past encounters, recently the Guardians seem to have had an upper hand over their White Sox adversaries. True, the advantage of having a 45-49 record over a 32-64 record isn't the same as landing on the moon, but it does give some gravity to the Guardians' odds - although not as poetic or noteworthy.
Finally, the recent performance for both sides tells a similar tale. The Guardians are on a hot streak, and the White Sox, let's just say, they are not setting the world on fire.
So, here’s how I'd wager my two cents.
