Oh boy, we have quite the barnburner on our hands here, folks- er, individuals of assorted backgrounds and sporting interests. Today we're seeing the Detroit Tigers square off against the Cleveland Guardians over at the Progressive Field in Cleveland.
On the mound for the Tigers, we've got Reese Olson, sporting a cool 3.08 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP on this regular season. He's also been crackling with 9.8 K/9 across his 9 appearances this season. On home plate, the Guardians are giving the ball to Slade Cecconi, who's had a pretty decent season himself--a 3.70 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, and 9.2 K/9 across his 8 appearances.
Couple of big cats prowling the Tigers lineup lately, namely Jahmai Jones and Zach McKinstry. Jones has been swinging a mean bat with a .371 average while McKinstry ain’t too far behind either with .354 - not to mention his penchant for grand theft base, racking up 7 stolen bases. That’s like stealing candy from a baby seven times, but in a professional sports setting. Greene and Torkelson have also been roaring with outstanding performances from their end.
Over in the Guardians camp, we've got Kyle Manzardo and Steven Kwan carrying the weight, albeit with batting averages that can be best described as yawn-inducing compared to the Tigers’ numbers. Granted, they've got Jose Ramirez, who's a live wire on the basepaths with his 7 stolen bases, but given his .232 average, he's been huffing and puffing more for the steals than getting a good hit.
Taking a quick dive into the history books, past matchups between these two teams have been a dance of sorts - one step forward, one step back. Not to be a stick in the mud here, but the regular season records do furrow my eyebrows a bit. The Tigers flaunt a 54-34 record, while the Cleveland Guardians sit easy, a bit too easy, with a far from stellar 40-45. As they say, you are who your record says you are – and right now, the Tigers seem far more voracious!
With all factors at play, the Lake Erie winds favoring the pitcher, and the recent form of both teams taken into account, I wouldn't bet my lunch money on the Guardians. So without further ado...
