It’s on to the diamond we go, as the St. Louis Cardinals trade pitches with the Pittsburgh Pirates in their home turf, PNC Park. Now as we all know, this Park can be a bit of a hitter's paradise, so we could be in a for a bit of a slugfest tonight.
Stepping up to the mound first is Mr. Strikeout himself, Sonny Gray for the Cardinals, sporting a delightful 3.41 ERA and an impressive 9.8 K/9 rate hit-to-strikeout in his 16 appearances this season. Mitch Keller, on the other hand, will start for the Pirates with a 3.96 ERA, and 7.1 K/9 from his 17 appearances. Interesting match-up there, but let’s not forget Keller probably still remembers Gray stealing his lunch money last season.
Looking at the roster, my, oh my, the Cardinals have got themselves a couple of thoroughbreds in Yohel Pozo, Alec Burleson, and oh, don’t even get me started with Nolan Gorman. Their bats could cause some headaches tonight. On the Pirates' side, though, there are a few contenders too – keep an eye on Ke'Bryan Hayes and Tommy Pham.
However, historically, it’s a bit of a seesaw between these two teams. But their last meetings surely got the Cardinals ruffled, with the Pirates stealing the show twice in their last encounters. That said, I wouldn't count the Cardinals out just yet. They're above .500 in their regular season, while the Pirates are struggling to stay afloat.
Sure, the Pirates have been hot lately, winning all of their last five games, but the Cardinals will have a chip on their shoulder after their recent losses to Pittsburgh. I mean, who wouldn’t?
All that said and done, here it is folks. Drum roll, please:
