Alright, if we're talking AFL and we're talking round 9 of Essendon Bombers versus Sydney Swans, buckle in because you're in for a treat. Ay, don't forget your helmet.
Looking at a brief stroll down memory lane, the Swans have had a floral arrangement of wins over the Bombers in their recent encounters, which might make folks sporting the red and black slightly, how should we put it, queasy. They last rustled feathers back in 2023 with a narrow loss by two points, and repeat offenders in 2024.
Looking beyond the rear view mirror, we're fresh into round 9 of the regular season, and if history has taught us anything, it's that anything can happen. Theoretically, the season is anyone’s to lose. Practically, not so much.
Current form does cast a bit of cloud over the sunny disposition of the Swans, with only a 3-5 record to speak to, sitting at #14 in the AFL 2025. Isn’t that a bit of a pickle?
On the flip-side of the pancake, the Bombers can’t exactly be out here throwing a party with their 4-3 record, placing them at #12 in the AFL 2025. Still, better than being a cucumber in a world full of gherkins.
In recent forays, the Bombers just edged out North Melbourne while the Swans gave Greater Western Sydney a bit of what-for. Never mind the rest, they say you’re only as good as your latest run, though somehow I don’t quite think that’s what they had in mind.
So let's wrap this up like a fish supper. On paper, the Swans may look a touch more likely to break through. Nevertheless, considering their inconsistency and the fact Bombers have been proving they can withstand a bit more turbulence recently, it's quite plausible that this could turn into a 'who didn't lose’ situation rather than a clear cut win scenario.
