Looking at the Internazionali d'Italia and keeping my snark to minimum levels, Katie Volynets and Clara Tauson seem set for another bout of swinging rackets and grunting. Going by their last encounters, it seems they have an interesting storyline – like a metaphorical tennis flavored seesaw, if you will. Tauson tipped the balance last October, but Volynets gave her a run for her money the month before.
Fast forward to more recent times, and Tauson has been playing tennis like I play darts after three glasses of Merlot. Only managing a solitary win in her last five outings gives me the impression that Tauson has lost more than just matches, perhaps her confidence level is playing hide and seek too.
Volynets, on the other hand, is churning out wins faster than a puppy discovering a fresh roll of toilet paper. Four victories in her last five, including against Kvitová – and that’s no small affair. The only chink in her armor being Shnaider taking her down in late April.
Tauson, of course, ranks above Volynets on paper, sitting comfortably at 22 while our dear Volynets doesn’t even make the seeding chart. But you know what they say about sports, it's not played on paper, but on... *drumroll* ... a court!
Let's see how many sets are required for the unseeded underdog Volynets to show Tauson who whacks the fuzzy ball better this time.
Albert’s Prediction: Volynets in 3 sets
