Ah, the sweet smell of competition in the air as the New York Yankees pay a visit to the Seattle Mariners at the somewhat pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Quite the interesting matchup indeed, a delightful baseball soup that's been on a slow simmer since the dawn of the season.
Man in charge of the Yankee's pitching duties, we have Will Warren, boasting a less than stellar ERA of 4.94 and a WHIP of 1.42. Warren has managed to rake up 10.7 K/9 this season over his 8 appearances. On the other side of the turf, we have the Mariners giving the ball to Luis "Scrooge McDuck" Castillo with an ERA of 3.97 and a WHIP of 1.39; maybe not Hall of Fame credentials, but certainly better off than Mister Warren over there. On paper, it's a slight advantage Mariners there.
As to the troops armed with wood and leather, for the Yankees Aaron Judge is making quite the scene with a batting average of a whopping .444, Paul Goldschmidt is also keeping a respectable .346. Mariners' Leonardo Rivas, though sitting lower than Judge on .350, is no slouch, and J.P. Crawford's .316 is worth noting as well. Power hitting? Well, tread lightly around Cal Raleigh, with 10 home runs under his belt. The Yankees’ Judge and Trent Grisham have 8 and 9 boomers each this season. Quite the power lineup, I must say.
Based on their head-to-head past, it's been neck-and-neck for both the teams. The Yankees, though, had their last laughed out loud when they thrashed the Mariners 11-5. But overall, there's not much to choose between the two if we're looking at the past matchups.
Regular season has treated Yankees slightly better, they're standing tall at 24-17, compared to 22-18 for Mariners. In recent results as well, the Yanks seem to have a slight upper hand.
So where does my wild pendulum of predictions land? Considering the slight edge to the Mariners in pitching, and a close match in player firepower, and taking into account the fact that I may have had too much coffee this morning...
