Fritz in 3 sets.Oh, what a strange, beautiful ballet tennis can be! Let's have a cheeky chat about two Americans who are about to square off in the Internazionali d'Italia - Taylor Fritz versus Marcos Giron.
Fritz, the 4th seed, has a silky smooth forehand and a serve that might give you whiplash if you're sitting courtside. Despite his recent unfriendly encounters with Ruud and Bonzi, Fritz has still managed to pull some impressive moves, showing Berrettini who's boss in a three-setter just about a month ago. We've got to remember, though, that Berrettini showed Giron the exact same courtesy. Fritz seems to enjoy a good bounce back, so don't be surprised to see him coming out swinging.
Unseeded Giron, on the other hand, a bit of a couple's therapy routine with Diallo and Tien. But this doesn't hide the fact that he's also been dancing with defeat against Berrettini, Kecmanovic, and Draper. He's had a mixed bag of results lately, but even in the darkest clouds, there is a silver lining – Giron managed to steal a set from Fritz the last time they played.
Looking at their particular head to head, Fritz leads with a comfortable 2-1 margin. Comfortable, yes, but don't forget Giron has tasted victory against Fritz, and that's an appetizer he would love to turn into a full meal.
However, we have to make a call here, and my money - purely metaphorically speaking since gambling is a rabbit hole I dare not tumble down - is on the 4th seed making it a bit of a squeeze, but ultimately proving too strong. It's love-all right now, but by the end of it, I reckon Fritz will have the last dance.
