My Prediction
New Jersey Devils by 2Tonight, we have the New Jersey Devils squaring off against the Philadelphia Flyers. Always a feisty affair, this one. Now, let's take a gander at what we have in store for us.
The goalkeeper situation is interesting here, with the Devils' Jake Allen boasting a nifty season save percentage of 90.6 and Jacob Markstrom holding a similar figure of 90.8. The Flyers, on the other hand, will probably rely on Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov, who have been a bit shaky with their save percentages at 88.9 and 88.4 respectively this season.
Turning to the Devils' firepower, Jack Hughes has been on fire this season with 27 goals and noticeably strong in the recent month with 4 goals. Nico Hischier has also been decent with 26 goals this season and 2 in the past month. While their other players have chipped in, the real show has been put up by these two.
Looking at the Flyers, Matvei Michkov and Owen Tippett have been carrying the scoring load. Michkov has scored impressive 6 goals in the last month and Tippett isn’t far behind with 5. But the plus-minus ratios clearly indicate that there is quite a bit of slack to be picked up by the rest of the team.
Talking about past matchups, the Devils have had the upper hand, with a recent trouncing of the Flyers 5-0 on Thu Jan 30, 2025.
Looking at the season records and recent games, there’s a bit of a mixed bag. The Devils have been more consistent, even if they did lose 6-1 to Winnipeg recently. The Flyers' form has been a bit up and down recently. The match against Seattle seems to have been particularly sobering with a 4-1 defeat.
Now, if I were a maths guy, which, thank heavens, I’m not, I’d have to put my money on the Devils here. They have stronger goaltending and their top players have been more consistent. Plus, the past matchups do lend a level of comfort. However, this is hockey, and we all know anything can happen. But for today, I'm forced to be that predictable guy. So, here it goes...
