There seems to be a touch of ordinary happening down at the Essendon camp. Their latest games suggest they may have been focusing less on footy and more on perfecting their pie handoff at the local bakery. No doubt, Richmond came down on them harder than an anvil on a cartoon character in their recent match.
However, don’t iron your "Giants Are Grand" banners just yet! Greater Western Sydney, though standing tall in the league ladder, isn't exactly causing tremors in the AFL scene currently. Granted, they've bagged some decent results and certainly have the down under pundits chirping with delight. But could complacency be their Achille’s heel?
In their recent dance cards, the Jets and Bombers have dished out mix bags. Last year, Essendon took a defeat to Giants that not even Thor's hammer could equalize. But they've dusted themselves off and taken the recent games by a hand. So we're left wondering if Essendon Bombers are sheep in wolf's clothing, or if Greater Western Sydney Giants are just pulling the long con for the finals?
Taking everything in stride, the end result appears to be a more subtle case of David versus Goliath. The only difference here, folks, is that Goliath has been hitting the gym while David's been hitting the snooze button. If the Bombers have got a stone in their slingshot, they'd better hope it's a blinder... Because their season record says their aim has been as off as a drunk kangaroo on a pogo stick.
Play the man and not the ball they say, position over form, and so here we are. I'll come right out and say it, the Giants have had a stronger season. They're looking down from 7th in the standings, while the Bombers are languishing at 14th, probably trying to figure out if down is up. All past performances, team forms and hieroglyphics considered, I'd hang my hat in the Giants' camp, and if Essendon doesn't pull an upset, my humble pie will be served with a side of crow. With the ball rolling in the Giants' court, the Bombers might just eat dust unless they drop a hard tackle or two.
