Crusaders by 3Alright, strap in lads and lasses, because we're about to dive headfirst into the rabbit hole that is Super Rugby statistics. Today we're highlighting the Crusaders and the Chiefs, two heavyweights of the Pacific division, both with a history as tangled as my headphone cords.
The Chiefs have been enjoying the view from the top of the pile, sitting pretty at number one in the standings. They've certainly earned that spot with an admirable 8-3 record. That's not to say the Crusaders are any slouch, they're hot on the Chiefs' heels at second place, with a record of 8-2.
Rewind the tape and glance back at their past matchups, and you'll see it's a bit of a toss-up. Sure, the most recent encounter ended with Chiefs' fans wiping their brows and exhaling a sigh of relief, as their boys enjoyed a 49-24 win. But, well, let's just say that the Crusaders have been known to hold a grudge, and they won't have forgotten that 37-26 victory of 2024 anytime soon.
Taking on a more recent outlook, the Chiefs seem to be struggling, stubbing their toe against a coffee table named the Hurricanes, with a 35-17 loss. On the other side, the Crusaders are holding their own, besting the Highlanders 43-10.
All in good fun, but it comes down to brass tacks now, doesn't it? My prediction? Why, given these high-roller odds, I would say the Crusaders pull some sleight of hand tricks and snatch victory from the Chiefs, sending them toppling from their towering, number one perch. The Chiefs' morale may be a bit too inflated, and the Crusaders aren't looking too shabby with their season performance. It’s akin to a slow, dramatic heist scene in an action film - you could see it coming but can’t believe the audacity of it.
