So, despite my incessant complaints about the frigid rink temperatures, allow me a momentary jaw exercise as we delve into the heart of tonight's ice dance. It’s the Washington Capitals against the Calgary Flames - a game hotter than a summer night in Death Valley!
First off, Washington Capitals' Logan Thompson is flashing a spectacular save % of 94.6 for last month, and Charlie Lindgren isn't far off in the back-up with a % of 91.6. Quite like my comedy act, nobody seems to be getting past them. On the other side, Calgary Flames’ goaltender Dustin Wolf isn't exactly huffing and puffing, bringing a commendable last month save % of 92.6. I mean, Dan Vladar has struggled a bit with 88.5% saves last month, but let’s not focus on the negatives, right?
When we move from the defenders to the deliverers, Washington possesses some heavy hitters. Pierre-Luc Dubois and Aliaksei Protas had an admirable last month with 5 and 6 goals respectively. Not to forget, the legendary Ovechkin with 7 goals last month. He’s quite the human Zamboni, clearing everything in his path. Calgary, on the other hand, has Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau who've also made their mark, scoring 4 and 6 goals respectively last month. Watch out for Matt Coronato too, he’s the kind of variable that can turn the tide of any game.
History, like my ex, tends to repeat itself. Looking at past matchups, Washington has had the upper hand with a couple of wins. But let’s not put all our pucks in one net, the regular season records and recent results tell us this is anyone's game! Washington with 33 wins compared to Calgary's 24 doesn’t quite paint the whole picture. Let's remember how Calgary surprised the life out of Winnipeg just a few games ago.
