Cerundolo in straight sets.
Our semi-finalists for the BMW Open, Francisco Cerundolo and Ben Shelton, do make for thrilling tennis, don't they? Their past duels would put old western gunslingers to shame. In their last meeting, young Ben Shelton emerged victorious - the David to Cerundolo's Goliath. Now, don't hang your bets on that old hat match. No, folks, this is a whole new rodeo. And boy, have they been riding!
Shelton's been flurry on the court, defeating Darderi, Van De Zandschulp, and Gojo all in a month's time frame. However, two losses against Davidovich Fokina and Wong - both games where he gave in after three sets - cause a sliver of doubt about his staying power.
Mr. Cerundolo, on the other hand, certainly seems to have the wind in his sails. His straight set victories over Goffin, Shevchenko, Struff, and Fognini demonstrate a solid form. That single loss against Alcaraz is a speck on an otherwise clean record of a month.
That, combined with the fact that Cerundolo is the better seeded player here, shows a slightly higher peg in quality. And we do love a good peg on our charts, don't we? The quality, dear friends, always makes the difference in the end.
But remember, just like Rome wasn't built in a day, a match isn't just won in the first set. Let's see if Shelton can rise in the face of adversity or if it's "love" from Cerundolo that settles this semi-final encounter.
Without further ado, let's get to the prediction that you're all eagerly waiting for. Here's my two cents.
Albert’s Prediction: Cerundolo in straight sets.
