Oh, strap in, sports fans, the excitement is borderline palpable with this minor skirmish on the lower rungs of the ladder between the Sydney Swans and Port Adelaide Power. It's Round 15—nearly to the business end—but neither of these titans of mediocrity are shaping to be the dark horse of the competition.
Reviewing the romantic history between our two specimen of AFL prowess, we appreciate a little bit of a back and forth. Their last encounter saw the Power sneak out with an 8-point victory, but don't forget Swan's 36 point belting they served up in our previous calendar year. It's like a see-saw, too much of one person's weight and it all goes horribly wrong.
Peeping in on the Swans, with their 5 wins and 8 losses, they're fluttering more like lame ducks than majestic birds of flight. A promising win against Richmond doesn't erase the memories of the massive 90-point drubbing by Adelaide, does it? Consistency, like a good plate of nachos, appears to have slipped through their fingers.
Port Adelaide, with their slightly superior 6-7 record, have had their own series of ups and downs, more bipolar than a weather vane in a cyclone. Wonderful conquests against Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney are blotted by the massacre at the hands of Geelong. A heartbreaker against Adelaide still resonates.
Peering at the ladder standings – and it's more of a step stool at this point – Port Adelaide is ever so slightly higher. Ah, the thin air at Number 11 must be dizzying compared to sturdy, dependable Number 13 that Sydney occupies.
Given this veritable roller coaster of inconsistencies, 'sure things' are about as reliable as a chocolate teapot. But, given the rollercoaster trends and the bookies' favoritism, I'll side with the 'slightly less likely to disappoint' Power to inch out a win here.
