Judging by the fly on the slightly stale Vegemite sandwich, it appears we'll be dazzled with another spectacle of brawn and bravado in AFL's round 14 with the Port Adelaide Power and the Melbourne Demons. As we've seen before folks, this one promises to be as data-oriented as a NASA launch.
You might recall that in recent altercations, the Power squeaked a win over the Demons. Ah, the sweet agony of a 2 point defeat. But the Demons had their rendezvous with karma as they won by a solid 7 points early last year. Oh, how the demons laugh now.
Our Melbourne Demons have really been playing last few matches like their mascot is a faint-hearted kitten rather than a mythical creature. Sure, they snagged a pretty big win against Sydney, but losses against Collingwood and St Kilda does have us asking whether Melbourne has traded AFL for bubble-wrap popping.
Port Adelaide Power, almost a contradiction in terms considering their recent performances, doesn't fare much better. Umbrellas haven't been of much help against the storm of defeats, with losses against Fremantle, Geelong, Adelaide and Western. They did bag a win against Greater Western Sydney, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
With the season closer to its end than a savvy lemming to a cliff, Port Adelaide is languishing 2 spots behind Melbourne, and lemme tell you, neither are in the safe zone. Ironically, Melbourne is at 13th spot, unlucky for some, but it's all relative when Port Adelaide sits grumpily at 15th.
Given their recent form though, it's like predicting whether a tortoise or a snail will emerge victorious in a race. However, if you were to corner me in a bar and force me to place a bet... after a hearty chuckle and a glance at the dartboard... I'd be predicting the Demons to take this one. But it'll be a close shave, like barely clearing a garden gnome's hat.
