Fremantle Dockers by 30In an interesting twist of mathematics and football, the Fremantle Dockers find themselves squaring off against the Essendon Bombers. And while some may have faith in the Dockers’ home-field advantage or their higher-ranking chart on the ladder, others may argue that anything can happen in the AFL, especially when you have a history as these two do.
When you look at previous outings between these footy frenemies, the Bombers and Dockers have had a thrilling match in August 2024, with Bombers just edging out a win by one point. However, the intensity oscillates a bit in the June 2023 face-off, where the Dockers gave the Bombers a taste of their own medicine with a 32-point lead.
Now, moving on to the scoreboard, the regular season records show the Dockers with a steady, if not spectacular, 8-5 lead over the Bombers’ somewhat less steady 6-7 record. And if we're talking recent results, let's just say the Bombers might want to pounce on any four-leaf clovers they come across. On the other hand, the Dockers have lost once in their recent five games, and let's face it, they're certainly sailing smoother seas at the moment.
However, and I do love a good however, it's the AFL ladder that might just split your bet. The Bombers are languishing in 12th place, while the Dockers are sat comfortably at number 8. So, if there was a time for the Bombers to pull a rabbit out of their hat, this would certainly be it.
So, after evaluating recent performance, historical matchups, and current standings, I reckon the Dockers are the safer bet for a boring, responsible grown-up. They're in better form and higher up on the ladder. But hey, this is footy, and in footy, like in life, there are no guarantees. Just remember, the ball is oval, and it bounces weird.
