You know, I've always had an appreciation for a good underdog story, but today won't be the day I'm telling one.
Starting with the Washington Mystics, they've shown bits of magic this season, no pun intended. Brittney Sykes is in a rich vein of form, with impressive stats both this season and last month - averaging just shy of 20 points per game and Harmlessly passing off nearly 5 assists on average. Kiki Iriafen has also been a force, particularly under the hoop with close to a double-digit rebound average.
However, despite their efforts, the Mystics sit with an underwhelming 7-8 record and find themselves 8th in the WNBA. There was also that embarrassing blowout against the Atlanta Dream recently that I'm having a hard time forgetting.
Shifting to the Las Vegas side of the table, the Aces haven't exactly been a safe bet this season either sitting with a 6-7 record. That being said, I'd trust my money with A'ja Wilson and Jackie Young any day. Wilson in particular has been a revelation this season, putting up gaudy stats of over 20 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game.
Their struggles against premier teams, like the recent losses to the Seattle Storm and Minnesota Lynx, does pose a slight hesitation.
But here's the deal-sealer, in their past five meetups, Las Vegas has had Washington's number--winning all five. Add that to the fact that Vegas oddsmakers are pointing their favor towards the Aces... well, that's enough for me.
Weight all this up and I'm predicting we're going to watch the Aces strut out with another win. It might not be a walk in the park, but I expect them to get it done by a decent margin.
