I hope you took out your note pads and pens, kids, because we've got quite a scenario on our hands. Forget the atrocious weather forecasts we're expecting, the real storm that's brewing is between the Chiefs and the Blues in the Super Rugby Qualifying Finals. As tempting as it is to just turn your gaze towards the payout data and place your bets, we do have a saying in rugby – the ball is round, and it bounces any which way.
Look at the history books, folks – sorry, not 'folks', I mean people. The Chiefs have had a far superior season, dominating with a fantastic 11-3 record. The Blues, on the other hand, seem to be lost in their blues with a disappointing 6-8 standing. Having said that, the Blues have proven that they can show up when it counts. Remember June 1st, 2024? When everyone had written them off, they pranced onto the field and made the Chiefs look like choir boys with a 31-17 victory. And if you need a fresher memory, recall the Blues' massacre of NSW Waratahs just last week... they really didn't see that one coming.
Don't go running to the banks yet, though. Recent results for the Chiefs make them look like a squadron of untamed beasts. The dismantling of the Highlanders with a commanding 41-24 victory speaks volumes about their form and they come into the playoffs as force to reckon with.
In the regular season, the Chiefs managed to outscore the Blues in both face-offs, scraping by with a narrow victory in March and securing a more comfortable one in February. The team standings also lean heavily in favor of the robust Chiefs, who've dominated the charts from the get-go, while the Blues have been trying to eke out a decent living at the 6th spot.
Drawing a conclusion from all this, it’s quite clear that a Blues victory would be like finding a unicorn at the end of the rainbow. Possible? Perhaps. Likely? Well, I don’t gamble, but let's just say I wouldn’t bet my grandmother’s dentures on it. Expect the Chiefs to bring the thunder, and the Blues to be singing the blues yet again.
