Ah, there's nothing like getting right into Super Rugby on a warm Saturday afternoon... or a frigid morning, depending on where you happen to be watching. We have a knock-down, drag-out affair on our hands, the Highlanders and the Blues ready to duke it out in season opener. What a treat!
Going through the history books here... last year, Blues seemed to enjoy the somewhat strenuous act of trampling over Highlanders – rather unceremoniously, may I add. But, in the world of sports, history is as reliable as a weather forecast from 1823, and now these teams are starting afresh; with a clean slate.
Checking in on the recent track records of these gladiators... The Blues have had a bit of a sudoku-like puzzle on their hands. They did, however, manage to claw their way to victory against giants such as the Fijian Drua and the Chiefs. The Highlanders on the other hand? They experienced the agonizing sting of loss more than they expected, with the Waratahs playing the role of a merciless tin of spinach to their Popeye.
Despite the Blues' gnarled tracks lately, they stand poised as the obvious breadwinner for any potential investors. Me, I'm more of a sock drawer investor, but you don't need to be a Wall Street shark to see the appeal here. Yet, remember that the Highlanders currently occupy a loftier position in the standings, which just makes things spicier than your grandma's secret salsa recipe.
So, in the grand pageant of rugby, if a suited banker asks where to place their chips, I'd say it's a safer bet to pick the Blues, but hey, what's life without a wild punt? Nevertheless, the spirit of fair play demands a prediction, so here we go...
