Keith Mitchell by 2 strokesI hope none of you have fallen into a deep golf-induced coma just yet, because we've got some action brewing at East Lake Golf Club. Let's cut to the chase - Keith Mitchell, shy of doing a full Happy Gilmore and declaring he just 'doesn't want to play golf anymore', seems poised to snatch the top spot. He saunters into the final round sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard with a total score of 20 under par. Sitting at 88th on the Tour, and coming off a respectable 12th place finish at the Procore Championship...let's just say, the man is not here to play patty cakes.
Right behind him, Beau Hossler, who probably sees Mitchell's spot and wants it more than a child wants candy. 19 under par isn't exactly scraping the barrel, but when you're up against a juggernaut like Mitchell, Hossler's 96th Tour ranking and his Procore Championship cut seems less a battle cry and more a whimper.
Kevin Yu isn't too far behind, either, his 18 under par putting him within striking distance if he plays his cards right. And, of course, if Mitchell decides to have a meltdown in the final round. With a Tour ranking of 127th and his recent cut in the Wyndham Championship, Yu's looming like an apocalyptic John Daly on the horizon.
As for the stars of the last round, Keith Mitchell didn't just win the race, he practically lapped everyone else. His round score of seven under par feels like a slap in the face to Mac Meissner's, Kevin Streelman's, and Emiliano Grillo's equally impressive six under par. While his fellow competitors were busy splitting the number 2 spot multiple ways, Mitchell made sure he staked his claim at number 1.
So, if you've somehow been roped into joining a golf betting pool by your overly enthusiastic coworker Dave from accounting, here are the tea leaves to read. Keith Mitchell seems as likely to blow his lead as I am to become the next Tour Champion. But, remember, this is the game of golf, where anything can, and often does, happen.
