Davis Thompson by 2 strokes
Stop the presses, folks. The top of the leader board after three rounds at the good old John Deere Classic is showing a bit of an underdog tale.
Is that our up-and-coming golden boy, Davis Thompson, sitting pretty at the top with a score of -15? Why yes, yes it is. And with a tour ranking of just 61st, going 15 under par might be Davis' way of saying, "Hey world, remember this name." His last outing was a little less illustrious, finishing 34th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but hey, maybe he's just a late bloomer.
Eyeing that top spot with quite some envy are David Lipsky, Max Homa, Brian Campbell, and Emiliano Grillo, all sitting a stroke behind at -14. Lipsky, clocking in a tour ranking of 224th and recently cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, seems to have found some magic out on the Deere Run. His playmate, Homa, with a tour ranking of 96th, mirrors Lipsky's latest result. Brian Campbell and Emiliano Grillo, with rankings of 110th and 137th, also had to pack their bags early at the Travelers Championship and Rocket Mortgage Classic respectively.
But let's take a short stroll down memory lane to last year's John Deere Classic. Davis Thompson swept the field with a -28 total score. Quite impressive Davis, can I get the number of your swing coach? Also in the limelight were C.T. Pan and Michael Thorbjornsen, both four strokes behind Thompson at -24. But, with them absent from our current leaderboard, it seems they've left room for the new kids.
Last round’s top performers deserve some recognition here too. Ladies and gents, dramatic applause for Patrick Fishburn, Philip Knowles, and Kurt Kitayama, who all dunked in the top spot with a magnificent round score of -5. But ghosts from tournaments past are haunting us as Davis Thompson again shows up on notable names, tying for fourth last round with a score of -4.
With all this mind-boggling data floating around, we still haven't addressed the million dollar question: who is taking home the trophy? So here it is, the moment of truth. If past performance and sheer will power are anything to go by, then my money is on...
Albert’s Prediction: Davis Thompson by 2 strokes
