If I were a betting man, I would take these two underwhelming records, the Penrith Panthers and the Wests Tigers, into the interrogation chamber, shine a light in their faces and ask, "Seriously, what's the deal?"
See here, we're at the 14th round of the season, neither team even near the top eight perch needed to make the playoffs.
Now, if I gaze back into the mirror of time, I note the Panthers giving the Tigers a taste of defeat last year despite a Tiger victory the year before. Not exactly what I'd call conclusive evidence in this whodunit mystery.
The recent performances of both squads have been as impressive as the culinary skills of an unsupervised toddler - sure, the Panthers showcased some moxie against the Parramatta Eels, and the Tigers tangoed quite splendidly against the North Queensland Cowboys, but overall, it’s been as palatable as cold porridge.
The respective standings are nothing to write home about either. The Panthers are 15th, the Tigers 13th. They might as well play this match on the moon, it’ll be more exciting.
But alas, as the renowned physicist, Niels Bohr, once cleverly quipped, "Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future." But in the spirit of sports, where men in tight shorts and questionable hairstyles collide in a beautiful rugby ballet, I have to don my prophet hat and make my call.
