Dallas Stars by 2Alright hockey lovers, join me in the rink as we slice into game 5 of the smoldering conflict between the Dallas Stars and the Winnipeg Jets. Let's break the ice a bit, talk about the talent on the scene, and toss out a prediction or two.
The Dallas Stars have Jake Oettinger between the pipes, with a pretty impressive playoff save percentage of 91.6%. The backup, Casey DeSmith, ain’t no slouch either, boasting a playoff save rate of 92.9%. Putting up a wall, that's what they’ve been up to!
On the other side of the pond, we got the Jets favored goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. The guy’s been caught a bit flat-footed in the playoffs with just an 85.1% save rate, quite a tumble from his regular season 94.5%. Backup Eric Comrie hasn’t been too hot either with only a 92.3% playoff save rate.
Time to bring in the heavy hitters, let’s talk field players. The Stars got Mikko Rantanen aiming for the net with 9 playoff goals under his belt, along with Roope Hintz with 5 goals to his name. Thomas Harley, despite his -5 plus minus in the playoffs, is still a key skater to watch.
Winnipeg, unfazed, fires back with their own artillery. They've got Kyle Connor who's drilled in 5 playoff goals, and Mark Scheifele with a not too shabby record of 3 goals. Let’s also pour one out for poor Mason Appleton who’s been on an assistant spree with 7 assists to his name but no goals.
Looking back, the Dallas Stars have been holding their own, leading the second round 3-1 and flaunting a season record of 50-26. Meanwhile, the Jets, despite their higher position in the regular season (56-22) and coming out on top in the Western Conference, seem to be hitting a bit of turbulence here.
Gazing at the patterns of past playoffs, the Jets haven't exactly been landing their flights, losing 3 of the last 5 games against the Stars. Despite this, they did put a strong 4 to nothing win on the board during their home game. Red eye or no, that’s something to consider.
Divining the outcome of this game from tea leaves and penalty shots, I’d wager, with an emphasis on 'wager', this match can fall to the Dallas Stars. They've been the stronger in the goalie department and have been cooling off the Jets in more recent games. The margin? I reckon it’s close, but I fancy Dallas by just a pair.
