Now, let’s jog our memories a wee bit, shall we? The last encounter these ladies had, the scales tipped in favor of Ms. Stearns. And considering she carries the number 6 marker in this tournament, she might indeed have a bit of the, shall we say, psychological upper hand.
Stearns' journey to the round of 16 hasn't been a straightforward love story, showing us her vulnerable side with some losses against Paolini and Lys. Still, her victories over Mingge Xu and, - let’s take a moment to acknowledge this – Osaka and Svitolina, surely did serve up a dose of confidence that will linger.
On the other side of the net, Rakhimova strides forward unseeded and somewhat under the radar. But don't let it fool you, she's got game, demonstrated by her wins against Cocciaretto, Watson, and Pera. But, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. She did stumble when she faced Blinková, though bounced back quickly with a victory over Starodubtsewa.
Nevertheless, a worthy point to ponder here is Rakhimova's propensity for three-set games. A source of grit and perseverance, or a telltale sign of inconsistency? Who's to say?
