Looking at this thrilling German Open encounter, we have Madison Keys, the firmly favored competitor, up against Marketa Vondrousova, an underdog who pays generously for the win. But let's not forget that the tennis court isn't a stock market, so let's dive a bit deeper.
Madison Keys certainly boasts the superior record between these two athletes, having twice shown Vondrousova the locker room door in the past. Couple this with her position as the 7th seed in the tournament, and we have the making of a surefire favorite - on the surface at least.
Vondrousova, however, enters this contest unseeded. Now, this isn't exactly comparable to entering a knight's duel armed with only a butter knife, but the odds certainly seem to be stacking up against her. Especially, as one might note, given her recent form which is rather inconsistent, swinging more wildly than a toddler with a pinata stick.
On the flip side we have Miss Keys. Her recent history is also a mixed bag of 'oh yes' and 'oh dear', much like opening a box of second-hand golf balls. There are some solid performances, no doubt, but also defeats which lead to a bit of furrowed brow questioning.
So where does this whirlwind of data leave us? I'm inclined to place my chips on Madison Keys, mostly because she has experience and a solid track record playing in her favor, which is a more pragmatic cocktail than a pie-in-the-sky upset, in this scenario.
However, do consider me more cautious than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I foresee Vondrousova not going down without a fight, wrangling possibly a set from Keys.
Albert’s Prediction: Keys in 3 sets
