Nearing the mid-season haul, we’re looking at an interesting face-off between the Golden State Valkyries, currently seat-warming at the 6th spot in the WNBA, and the Atlanta Dream who have spent the season somnambulating at a fairly comfortable 4th place.
Cranking the wheel for the Valkyries, we have Kayla Thornton who has been hammering in around 16.5 points a game last month and Tiffany Hayes, a fairly consistent contributor with around 15.7 points per game. Always good to see players who treat the bucket like a homing beacon.
Switching over to the Dream, the spotlight has been rightly hogged by Allisha Gray, who clocked in an impressive 19.1 points per game this season. Not too far behind, we have Rhyne Howard, at a robust 16.8 points per game. Strong players, strong basketball, gives you faith in the fundamentals.
A quick glance at the regular season records shows the Valkyries at 9-8 and the Dream enjoying a bit of a lead at 11-7. If you've got a keen eye for patterns, you may notice the Dream have been having themselves a bit of a siesta, losing 2 of their last 5 games, while the Valkyries have remained steady, coming out on top in 3 of their last 5. An idle Dream makes misfortune, as it turns out.
But enough beating around the bush. While the Valkyries present a hearty challenge, I’m siding with the odds here. With the strength of their top players and their better track record this season, I predict The Atlanta Dream will end up victorious.
