Always thrilling to see the Milwaukee Brewers collide with the St. Louis Cardinals again. It's like Thanksgiving dinner, you never know what's going to be thrown at you, but it's pleasure sitting through it.
As always, it's a bit of a toss-up, a game of chance, like choosing lottery numbers. Now, we're at Busch Stadium for this one, a place that's a bit stingy to the batters, keeping runs at bay as though it's on a diet.
Speaking of players who control the scoreboard, let's bring in the starting pitchers. The Brewers roll out with Jose Quintana, a man who seems to comb his hair with a stick of dynamite, because his stats this season are explosive. An ERA of 0.99, WHIP of 1.04, that's downright impressive compared to his St. Louis counterpart Erick Fedde, who's got a respectable but less rockstar-ish 3.33 ERA and 1.19 WHIP.
For the Brewers, Brice Turang and Sal Frelick are coming in hot with significant contributions. Plus, Jackson Chourio's numbers for runs and home runs are not to be ignored while Christian Yelich, despite a lower batting average, brings in a punch of power. Over on the Cardinals team, Brendan Donovan takes the spotlight, while Thomas Saggese and Lars Nootbaar follow with semi-impressive stats.
Judging by the past meetings, the Cardinals seem to enjoy slight advantage over the Brewers, keeping us on our toes. Our regular season records, however, mirror two ships passing in the night, with 13-15 and 12-15, respectively. It's hard to choose a dominant force out of that debacle.
Looking back at recent matches, it feels a déjà-vu as the Brewers suffered a series of close losses, one a heartbreaking defeat of 5-6 against these same Cardinals. The Cardinals, well, they found their groove, especially with two straight wins against the Brewers.
Keeping all these factors in mind, if this was a potluck, I'd bring my money on the Cardinals. They're at home, got the edge in starting pitcher and have had a bit more success recently. So, pardon my irrational certainty, but here goes nothing.
