Crunching the numbers here, you might think this will be a walk in the park for Duke - their number 11 ranking a tempting lure to bite on. However, if you’re a betting individual, let’s not rush to call this a done deal.
Starting with the Syracuse Orange, their top players have been performing commendably. They are led by Georgia Woolley and she’s been netting an admirable 17.3 points per game in the last month. She's backed up by Sophie Burrows and Kyra Wood, each having a decent run recently. Burrows and Wood have been doing their fair share of the lifting, putting up 12.7 and 12.0 points per game respectively in the past month. However, Syracuse’s recent form has been rather sketchy, netting just a couple of wins in their last five games, and their overall season record leaves much to be desired with 10 wins and 16 losses.
Hopping on down to Duke, their performance last month has been stable. Top players Toby Fournier and Oluchi Okananwa have numbers that aren't overpowering; Fournier netting 15.6 in the last month while Okananwa scored 13.3 in the same time period. Ashlon Jackson also contributes with a decent 10.7 points per game last month. However, compared to Syracuse, they're at an advantage with their 20-7 record this season, despite some recent hiccups. Oh, and did I mention Duke beat Syracuse in their past two meetings?
If these were stock markets, you'd put your money on blue chip Duke - better form, better stats across the board, and just look at that ranking. The Orange though, seem to be struggling to find their footing this season.
But hey, this is why we actually play the games, right? So, drum roll, please...
