Taking a gander at this matchup, it's a bit like choosing between instant coffee and the real deal brewed stuff. Fresh out of the South, we have the South Carolina Gamecocks (ranked #15) squaring off against the home team Clemson Tigers (#12). Just a hint, pour the coffee beans and let the brewing begin, folks.
Their last tango ended with Clemson standing tall with a 16-7 win, but past isn't always an accurate prologue and especially not in sports, that’s just not how it works. Regular season records are almost identical. Gamecocks have a 5-3 record, while Clemson is boasting a 6-2. So, wins and losses aren't really going to give you the winning numbers, are they?
Dipping a bit into their recent history, the Gamecocks have been on a bit of a rampage, beating the stuffing out of Wofford Terriers with an Allen Iverson 44 point blow-out and outmaneuvering Texas A&M Aggies by a solid 24 points. Clemson, on the other side, had narrower wins, but when you look at their struggle with Louisville Cardinals falling short by 12, it's not really confidence-inspiring, is it?
Now, onto our star players. South Carolina Gamecocks’ quarterback, LaNorris Sellers, has been lighting up the game like an out-of-control Roman candle, tossing 12 touchdowns with a sizzling passing efficiency of 194.7. Impressive, isn't it? The offensive spices to the brew are Raheim Sanders and Josh Simon, smashing through defenses and scoring like there's no tomorrow.
Talking about Clemson, we've got Cade Klubnik who's doing an alright job but is no match for Sellers. Their offensive buddies, Phil Mafah and Antonio Williams have been decent, but we're talking football here, not charity runs, right?
On the defensive side, it's always interesting who's been the mountains, who can't be moved. Sammy Brown at Clemson has been putting up a sizable fight. It’s like he owns a piece of the field out there. But on the flip side, there is Nick Emmanwori for the Gamecocks, proving to be equally formidable.
All things said, it's far from a charitable lunch service here. The numbers, results, and players seem to be telling us a story of a Gamecocks win over Clemson. The Gamecocks look stronger, sharper and hungrier while the Tigers seem to be banking on past laurels and home advantage a little too much. This may prove to be that bitter brew that they are forced to gulp down, much to their chagrin.
